Mission Statement

To establish Indigenous rights over the coastal and marine resources is the key motto of the organisation. Coastal Indigenous Peoples’ traditional livelihood areas have become the target of governments and their supported corporates as part of their policy of exploitation of marine resources and coastal urbanisation. Many seabed ecosystems and other resources are being destroyed. Through these activities they squeeze the rights of coastal Indigenous Peoples over the natural resources and the people are threatened by displacements and foresee their future as internal refugees in India. Climate change is another life threatening issue for the coastal Indigenous Peoples. Governments efforts to protect the coastline and coastal people are weak since they have been destroying natural protection of the ocean resources.

Coastal Indigenous Peoples wanted to participate and engage in matters related to their lives and livelihoods. Ocean governance by the various governance and the private sectors are not in favour of ocean or ocean sustainability. As a result, coastal indigenous people have lost their traditional fishing grounds, protected marine biodiversity (which they have been doing over centuries) and increased climate impacts. To fruitfully engage in all the matters, they would like to work with scientific organisations and institutes to contribute to the ocean science for sustainable development. Address sustainable challenges and promote and support sustainable development goals including goal 14.

14.4 By 2020, effectively regulate harvesting and end overfishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and destructive fishing practices and implement science-based management plans, in order to restore fish stocks in the shortest time feasible, at least to levels that can produce maximum sustainable yield as determined by their biological characteristics – https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/oceans/
