Promoting Sustainable Fisheries
‘പരമ്പരാഗത കടൽപ്പണി കൂട്ടായ്മ’ സുസ്ഥിര-ചെറുകിട മത്സ്യബന്ധനം പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുകയും, പരമ്പരാഗത മത്സ്യത്തൊഴിലാളികളുടെ അവകാശങ്ങൾ സംരക്ഷിക്കുക എന്ന ലക്ഷ്യത്തോടെയും പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന സംഘടനയാണ്.
ഈ സംഘടനയിലെ അംഗങ്ങൾ സുസ്ഥിരവും കടലിൻ്റെ ആവാസവ്യവസ്ഥയെ സംരക്ഷിച്ചുകൊണ്ടും പരമ്പരാഗത രീതിയിയിൽ മത്സ്യബന്ധനം നടത്തുന്നതിനാണ് മുൻതൂക്കം നൽകുന്നത്.
മാസത്തിലെ ഏതെങ്കിലും ഒരു ഞായറാഴ്ചകളിൽ സംഘടനയുടെ സാധാരണ പൊതുയോഗം കൂടുന്നതിനൊപ്പം സുസ്ഥിര മത്സ്യബന്ധന രീതിയെ സംബന്ധിച്ച 2 മണിക്കൂർ ചർച്ചയും അറിവ് ശേഖരണവും തുടർപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളും നടത്തി വരുന്നു. (ഇത്തരം പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളുടെ ഗുണഫലമായി അനധികൃത യന്ത്രവത്കൃത യാനങ്ങളിൽ നേരത്തെ പണിക്ക് പോകുകയോ സഹകരിക്കുകയോ ചെയ്ത പരമ്പരാഗത മത്സ്യതൊഴിലാളികൾ – 50 ൽ കൂടുതൽ വള്ളക്കാർ- അത്തരം മീൻപിടിത്ത രീതികൾ ഉപേക്ഷിച്ചു.)
അനിയന്ത്രിത മത്സ്യബന്ധനത്തിന്റെ പാർശ്വഫലങ്ങളും അവ കടലിൻ്റെ ആവാസവ്യവസ്ഥയ്ക്ക് ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്ന നാശനഷ്ടങ്ങളും മനസിലാക്കി സുസ്ഥിരമല്ലാത്ത മത്സ്യബന്ധനം നടത്തുന്നവരെ ബോധവൽക്കരിക്കുകയും നിരുത്സാഹപ്പെടുത്തുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.
അനധികൃതവും/നശീകരണവും/ സുസ്ഥിരതയുമില്ലാതെ മത്സ്യബന്ധനം നടത്തുന്ന യന്ത്രവത്കൃത യാനങ്ങൾക്കെതിരെ/ ട്രോളിംഗ് ബോട്ടുകൾക്കെതിരെ പരമ്പരാഗത ചെറുകിട മത്സ്യത്തൊഴിലാളികളായ സംഘടനാംഗങ്ങൾ ഇത്തരം മത്സ്യന്ധനം തിരുവനന്തപുരം ജില്ലയിൽ (കേരളം മറൈൻ ഫിഷെറീസ് റെഗുലേഷൻ സോൺ ഒന്ന്) അവസാനിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനായുള്ള പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ നടത്തികൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു (IUU Fishing Report link)
യന്ത്രവത്കൃത യാനക്കാർ നിരോധിത പേഴ്സ് സീൻ, റിങ്സീൻ വലകൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് നടത്തുന്ന ചെറുമീൻ മത്സ്യബന്ധനത്തെ എതിർക്കുകയും അതിൻ്റെ തെളിവുകൾ ശേഖരിച്ച് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥർക്ക് കൈമാറുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.
അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര മത്സ്യത്തൊഴിലാളി ദിനത്തിൽ (നവംബർ 21) സുസ്ഥിര മത്സ്യബന്ധനത്തെക്കുറിച്ചും പരമ്പരാഗത മത്സ്യബന്ധന രീതിയെകുറിച്ചും അതിന്റെ സംരക്ഷണത്തെക്കുറിച്ചും പ്രസംഗിക്കാനുള്ള അവസരം സംഘടനാ അംഗങ്ങൾ പ്രയോജനപ്പെടുത്തി.
പരമ്പരാഗത മത്സ്യത്തൊഴിലാളികളുടെ അറിവുകൾ പങ്കുവയ്ക്കാനായി സംഘടനാ പ്രതിനിധികൾ നിരവധി പൊതുവേദികളിൽ സംസാരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. പല മുഖ്യധാരാ മാധ്യമങ്ങൾക്കും സുസ്ഥിര മീൻപിടിത്തത്തെ സംബന്ധിച്ച അറിവും അനുഭവങ്ങളും പങ്കവയ്ക്കാറുണ്ട്.
The Association of Artisanal Fishers works towards promoting sustainable small-scale fishing and protecting the rights of Indigenous fishermen.
Members of this organization prioritize sustainable fishing practices that help preserve the marine ecosystem while supporting small-scale, artisanal fishing methods.
In every general meeting held on a Sunday each month, the organization conducts 2-hour discussions, knowledge-sharing sessions, and follow-up activities focused on sustainable fishing practices. As a result of these activities, over 50 traditional fishermen, including boat owners who had previously worked with or collaborated with unauthorized mechanized vessels, have now abandoned such methods.
By understanding the adverse effects of unregulated fishing and the damage it causes to the marine ecosystem, the organization is working to raise awareness and discourage others from engaging in unsustainable fishing practices.
The members are also committed to ending unauthorized, destructive, and unsustainable fishing practices by mechanized fishing vessels, particularly trawlers, in the Thiruvananthapuram district (Kerala Marine Fisheries Regulation Zone One) (IUU Fishing Report link).
The small-scale fishers oppose juvenile fishing carried out by mechanized vessel operators using prohibited purse seine and ring seine nets and actively collect evidence of these practices to report to officials.
On World Fisheries or Fishers’ Day (November 21), members of the organization delivered speeches on sustainable fishing, the importance of small-scale artisanal fishing methods, and the need to protect them.
Additionally, organization representatives have spoken at numerous public forums to share the knowledge of small-scale Indigenous fishermen. They have also shared their experiences and expertise in sustainable fishing with mainstream media outlets.
