To research, plan, and implement solutions based on Indigenous and Local Knowledge and Practices supporting the sustainable development of coastal communities and responsible marine resource use. Core services include needs assessments, eco-friendly ocean technologies, fish stock assessments, marine biodiversity evaluations, and integrating ILK with cultural and linguistic diversity. We also support sustainable artisanal fishing, plastic-free environments, localised weather information services for fishers, ocean literacy, and communication around coastal and ocean issues. Our work aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals through educational initiatives on sustainable resource use, intergenerational learning, coastal pedagogies, biocultural diversity, teacher training, and guidance for overseas studies. We further support innovations in coastal technologies, a solution-based approach grounded in the community’s traditional Indigenous knowledge, livelihood development and economic empowerment, renewable energy, marine debris management, and the preservation of Indigenous languages. Our initiatives also include establishing digital and physical libraries, community learning centres, community media platforms, vocational guidance centres, and coastal and marine tourism activities. We also support community-led development in collaboration with community organisations. Additionally, we offer consultancy services on sustainable development, blue economy, Indigenous issues, small-scale fisheries, and inclusive research, in collaboration with research institutions, UN agencies and other organisations.

The organisation aims to address interconnected challenges including the erosion of ILK and customary ocean stewardship, inequitable access to education, declining community participation in decision-making, port development and other pressures on customary coastal areas, increasing mechanised fishing in customary grounds, marine debris and waste, and climate-related risks. As communities face declining bargaining power and limited influence over decisions affecting their territories and livelihoods, BlueGreen supports community-led solutions grounded in ILK, lived experience, and local leadership to strengthen ocean stewardship, resilience, and sustainable coastal development, in collaboration with community organisations, research institutions, UN agencies, and other organisations.
